“News articles keep omitting the fact that he is deaf. It makes the view on the whole situation so different. How cunning one has to be to literally be deaf and still manage to commit such a heinous act.”

These are the words of one of William Atwell’s students. Atwell, associate professor of American Sign Language at the evangelical institution of Liberty University, recently was involved in what is the latest case of sexual assault surrounding the university. Atwell was arrested on November 20 and has two charges.

Although Atwell was arrested in late November, the first of his offenses took place on September 15 of this year. In criminal case details listed online, this incident involved Sexual Battery. On November 19, the second incident took place, landing Atwell a charge of “Abduct by Force/Intimidation.”

William Atwell is charged with Sexual Battery and Abduct by Force/Intimidation.
